IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THE MESSAGE BOARD
Up to this point I've been mildly annoyed at best when I am questioned
about the extremely limited amount of moderation that I do on
the BoB message board (in plain english - when I delete posts). I am now faced
with a situation in which I may have to research exactly how EZBoard reacts to requests for server logs and user information in specific cases
of criminal investigations.
Let me explain this in as clear terms as I possibly can.
It is one thing for you to email a person whom you feel is breaking rules
by selling PL product on the web. Assume in this case that you email a professional, courteous note to the effect of "by the way, did you know
you can't do that?".
Assume that does not seem to be enough to make you feel like
something has been done to rectify the problem. The next obvious step would certainly be to let the company know about it, and LET THEM
handle it since THEY (not you, not me) own the copyright/trademark/whatever in question.
Taking the matter further into your own hands and taking steps to shut
down a website by "hacking" into a cgi program is viewed by the authorities as a CRIME.
I do not know for a fact this actually happened. I don't have any desire
to know who, how, or any further details. The fact that it was posted on
this message board, however, puts me right in the middle of it as owner of the bestofboards domain. It truly jeopordizes the whole site, your
ability to benefit from all the truly wonderful sharing that happens here,
my web development business, and every client site I host on the
knoxy.net servers. Not to mention what could happen to the person(s) who
chose to take matters into their own hands should an investigation actually occur.
It matters not in the least what the original intentions were, or who is
more wrong than the other.
My best advice for future: think before you act. Make problems or issues
known to the people who CAN actually (and legally) do something about them - the home office. That's their job, not yours. This is not my
soapbox, this is just the way it is.

Ask
Dave! E-Zine
Although technically off-topic for this website, many of you know
Dave Flight (or one of those darn Dukes as he is affectionately known by
many), husband of Raven (Ravenquest/Spirits of the Fire website), is
also a teacher and webmaster extraordinaire. He has recently started
publishing a [monthly?] E-Zine with lots of user-friendly, easily
understood tech tips, tricks & ideas to help you conquer the things
your computer sometimes does to you. Most recently, an Anti-Virus
Edition that gives you the straight facts on keeping your computer safe
from those nasty little creepy crawlies that inject themselves into your
hardware, software, and operating systems.

Tealited.com - in transition
Due to several issues with 321website causing the Tealited website
to be unavailable in the past several weeks, Jackie is relocating her
website to a new host. There may be some spotty areas of the country
that might have difficulty getting to the site while the changes are
taking place - so here is a long address to use if you are having
trouble connecting to the www.tealited.com
site: http://www.321website.com/members/home/data/tl/homepage.html
will get you directly to the old Tealited website - and will remain in
place until she is up & running on the new host.
Now - for anyone who doesn't know what we're talking
about - Jackie provides the location for Steve Tucky's Illustrated
P.A.D. (Piece A Day) project, among MANY other things! It's a great
site, and Jackie puts a lot of time into it! **The original P.A.D.
project - text only in zipped format - is still located on Ravenquest's
Spirits of the Fire website.
Downloadable Files - Fund Raisers, etc.
Due to several requests for help on downloading the updated fund
raiser files, here are some step-by-step instructions.
(In Netscape)
If you click on the name of the file (the underlined hyperlink)
you should get a dialog box that says something like open in this
location or save file as. Choose save as, and then it will download to
your computer. Just remember where it's downloading to so you can go
back and find it.
(In Internet
Explorer) Because BoB is in frames and downloading the
file opens it directly IN the browser window, instead of clicking on
the file name as you normally would, RIGHT-CLICK on it, and choose
"open in new window". Then when you use "File -
Save" in your menu bar, you'll actually save the fund raiser
file, not the web page on BoB.
I had to walk through this step by step to
figure out how to explain it - I absolutely dislike Internet Explorer
with a passion and rarely ever use it. I'm a tried & true Netscape
user - although the newest version (6.0) is not to my liking -
probably because they tried to make it like IE :). I use the freely
downloadable Netscape version 4.72 (with 128 bit encryption so I can
do my online banking securely) - it's the most stable and easiest to
use.
! Remember
! - the files require at least Office 97 or greater -
Office 95 won't work. You can choose to download the available free
viewers from Microsoft, or the Adobe pdf formatted versions of the
files if you do not have Office 97. I am following up with my
wholesale supplier to see if I can get any more copies of Office 97
Professional to offer to those of you who are still interested. Stay
tuned....

Conference Location!!!!
No - I'm not releasing any "secrets" - it has been made
public on the company's general public website! Best of the Boards
policy is and has always been to not post promotional or other
time-sensitive information until the home office has made it publicly
available first. You can review highlights from last year's conference
as well as the dates & location of this year's conference on the company's website.
January 17 revision:
Apparently the company has now revised their public page to NOT
include the location. I became aware of this today via email from a
consultant who was disappointed that the Conference Location had been
revealed here on BoB in the form of the A&R Marketing button. The
graphic image of the button will be reposted at a later date due to
the company's apparent error in posting the 2001 Conference Location
on their public webpage at some point within the past several days. At
the time of original posting on Saturday morning, 1/13, the page
indicated above DID contain the information. I would never have posted
the update had it not been (perceived) publicly available. -Belinda

Directory News
I'm very sorry, but I feel I need to pull the Consultant Directory,
as I am just unable to keep it current. The intended usage has always
been simply to enable consultants to find fellow consultants in their
area - most often to help out a long-distance sponsored person in
finding training or support locally. That need can be as easily (and
probably a lot more reliably) filled by posting on the message board
when the need occurs.
I did do some preliminary work on an automated
directory over Thanksgiving, but as anyone who actually writes database
scripting knows, it's a monumental task, and I have not been able to get
back to it since then. It may yet happen, but I cannot realistically put
a time frame on it.
It's not fair to leave the directory in the current
state without having a realistic expectation of adding new consultants
or updating out-dated information.
Please understand that I feel there are more
productive ways to provide information here on BoB (such as flyers,
ideas, games - all of which have been sadly lacking the past three
months) than the incredibly time-consuming manual entry of names in the
Directory. Hopefully this will allow me to get back to providing the
real, basic business-building topics that the site was created for in
the first place.

From Shirley, the Bag Lady
Many of you already know about the loss of one of our
loved consultants here in central Florida in the Sophistication region.
Her name was Linda Cline and she was killed in an auto accident 2 days
before Christmas. Her two young boys were in the car with her and
survived the crash. Her insurance expired 1 1/2 hours before the
accident. She was killed instantly.
The family is left with many expenses they will be
paying for many years. We have established a Linda Cline Memorial Fund
for her family. I have decided since we did so well for the ACS with my
bag raffle, that I would do the same for Linda. She was a shining light
in the group - spirited, positive all the time, and never saw her
without a smile. I will be raffling off a Seville bell protector
(lined), an ice crystal trio bag set, a 3-wick soft-sided bag
(awesome bag) and a peg pair - they will be in the new beautiful
Atlantic Blue color - all monogrammed with the candle and the ict with
the glass on each one.
You may send as many chances in at $5
each you wish - just specify on your check that the donation
is for the bag raffle, and make check out to Linda Cline Memorial
Fund. Thank you, Shirley Godwin, the "Bag Lady"
