Spirits of the Fire Candle Chat
Dave Flight offered to setup & launch a public IRC chat for us
in our continuing quest for the best, easiest, most accessible chat room
for scheduled chats that can accommodate a lot of people. He did so, and
we need lots of people to hit it tonight between 9 & 11PM CST to
fully test the capabilities. Thanks for your help & have fun!
This does not mean that the AIM chat & ICQ are not
still great alternatives - try them all - use what works for you. It's
great to have options!

AOL
AIM Chat
Netscape Users:
Right-click on the link above, choose "Save Link As" and save
it to your desktop. Launch the chat window by clicking on the icon on
your desktop.
IE Users:
Left-click on the link as if to open it as you would any link. You can
choose either "Open this file from its current location", in
which case it should open the chat, or choose "Save the file to
disk", and download the link to your desktop, from which you can
then double-click to open the chat window as you would any other link.
Please email me if you follow the appropriate
instructions for your browser and it still
doesn't work.

You
do not have to be an AOL subscriber to take part in the AIM chat, and I
don't have to be "in" the chat room in order for it to be
"open".
You do need to have AOL Instant Messenger installed -
it
is free to download from www.aol.com ,
but if you are a Netscape user you already have it installed. Find it on
the menu drop-down under Communicator: AOL Instant Messenger.
The BoB screen name is: bestofboards (of
course), and here are 35 additional BoB
users to start your buddy list
off with.
As suggested in a message
board topic earlier today, it is a very wise idea to set
security preferences on your AIM Buddy List in a similar manner as we
did for ICQ.

The following screen will pop up, from which you
should set file transfer
preferences on the File Transfer tab, so as to not allow incoming files.
This is just general good practice to avoid becoming a target for
viruses.

So, should you still use ICQ? Sure - if it's working
for you, go for it! If you're having troubles getting it to respond
correctly, you might give AIM a try, especially since it is most likely
already installed on your machine. In addition, we are still testing out
a couple other large group chat options. Dave Flight, from Spirits
of the Fire, is heading up the mass chat effort, so stay tuned!

Just a reminder: NO Vendors are "sanctioned" by the company
for attendance
during conference. ALL vendors participate at their own cost and OFF
actual
"Conference" grounds (i.e. TWA Dome). The "Friday Nite
Fling" is also not a
company-sponsored event. Now that we have the "legal"
disclaimer out of the way LOL, on to the news you all have been waiting
for!

Regularly Scheduled ICQ Chat 9:00 pm CST
I unfortunately will not be there as MY ICQ is being temperamental,
and I also have baseball tickets to the Royals/Cardinals game tonight,
so Evan & I are going to get out of the house and away from the
computer & drink beer & eat peanuts (OK no beer for Evan and
only one for me LOL)
I have asked Jennifer (flameNarizona -
120845006), Charlene (See&Emm - 42829939), and Jackie (tealited -
120837700) to help get people in & out of chat tonight. (the
parenthesis are their ICQ screen names/numbers). How do you get in? Make
sure at least those three folks are on your ICQ contact list, and when
you see them online, message them to request the chat. If you have
trouble, try posting on the message board and someone who is on ICQ may
be able to help you.
A handy tool: if you are already a
member of the candlecyberunit list on YahooGroups, Jenn has set up a
database that you can enter your instant messaging IDs in and view other
folks IDs so you can get in touch. The direct link to go update your
info or look for someone else is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/candlecyberunit/database.
If you are not a member when you go to the link I believe you will be
prompted to join. For more information on this particular subject -
email Jenn@bestofboards.com.

BoB ACS Raffle!
It's that time again! If you would like to enter the Raffle and join our
efforts to fight cancer, go to the BoB ACS Raffle
2001 page to read all
the details!
Grand Prize to be announced soon!

All
entries received by July 16, will also go in the Bonus drawing for the BoB Bonanza
Box - filled with goodies!
Just
a Reminder
As you may be aware, the
US Postal Service released its "Fund the Cure" stamp over a
year ago to help
fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of
Bethesda, Maryland, and is still available for purchase in many areas.
It is important that we take a stand against this
disease that kills and maims so many of our mothers, sisters, friends.
Instead of the normal $.34 for a stamp, this one costs $.40. The
additional $.07 will go to breast cancer research. A "normal"
book costs $6.60. This one is only $8.00.
If the Breast Cancer Stamps are still available in
your local post office, consider buying them the next time you buy
stamps. A little bit can go a long way!

New search engine on BoB!
Just click on the
button on the left of this screen and try it out! ( You may need
to refresh your browser for the new search engine link to load) Best of
the Boards has gotten so large that as you know, it's sometimes
difficult to find that one file you remembered seeing. Hopefully,
this will solve that problem. Let's all give it a good
work-out!
Invitation to the "Red Cat Club"!
The AT&T chat room on BoB has been reliably unreliable as of
late, and we would like to invite you all to try out ICQ. It is a great
instant message/chat client, freely downloadable from www.icq.com
. It's been around longer than MSN & AOL IM, and I used to use it a
lot when we first created the BoB website. Please be aware though, that
it's a good idea to take a few security & privacy precautions to
avoid a lot of unwanted messages from unwanted sources.
For
those who are about to sign up for a number - when you are filling out
the registration screens - I STRONGLY suggest you do NOT
specify age, birthdate, gender, and location (other than maybe state
and/or country).
If you already filled it out and want to change your
details - it's very easy to do so. Your system toolbox at the bottom of
your screen probably looks something like this:

The little green flower is the ICQ icon. Right click on it and choose
"Open ICQ". You will next see an ICQ Contact List pop up on
the right side of your screen.--------->>>>> It's
resizable, and movable to wherever you want to put it on your screen.
Notice the bottom section of the Contact List. The
blank entry box is a handy search box to allow you to search the web.
Directly above that are the letters ICQ.
hint...hover your mouse over
the letters (on your contact list - not this example) to "let the cat out of the bag"
Left click on the letters ICQ and you will get a popup
menu that looks like this:

Use the
View/Change my Details to edit your profile (what anyone can see about
you).
Use the Security & Privacy to manage HOW visible you are when
online.
I STRONGLY suggest you use the following
settings on the General & Ignore tabs. This should keep you from
being the recipient of mass emails that are unwanted. It does mean that
you have to authorize everyone who requests to be added to your contacts
-
There
are lots more options you can explore and set to your particular preference.
Explore the menus on your contact list screen, have fun. There are
several really good help pages on the ICQ site to help you get the most
out of the program. Guided Tour:

or for those who like shortcuts:

www.icq.com/icq123/
We will re-institute a Wednesday & Sunday night
regularly scheduled chat starting this Wednesday 6/13 at 9 pm CST. Just
be online, have ICQ running, and I'll drag you into the chat window from
there!
Can I have an ICQ old-timer who would be willing to be
a guru for a while to help people get in the swing of things? Email
me with your messageboard screenname & your ICQ number if
you're interested in helping answer questions and post helpful hints in
an ICQ forum.

After two solid weeks of limbo and a lot of long hours on the phone,
in front of FAQs, and in front of the computer screen, we should once
again be in full control of the BoB website. There's a substantial bit
of "cleanup" on a lot of the older pages of the site now that
we are moved again, but between Jenn, Jackie & myself we should be
able to make a pretty good run at it.
Things that quite likely may not work
RIGHT NOW, or sporadically temporarily:
Guestbook
Contest Viewing Pages (which is why we are not having a caption
contest right now - it WILL return)
