Level 4 Virus Alert! THIS IS NOT A HOAX! W32.Badtrans.B@mm
I have been receiving this virus all
day from different persons. This one can be very dangerous! The virus arrives via the Microsoft Outlook email
program and attempts to send itself by replying to unread email
messages.
The email may contain the text "Take a look to the attachment"
in the message body and may or may not contain a viewable attachment. The attachment name is created in three sections, for
example, card.doc.pif.
If the attachment is opened, the worm displays a message
box entitled, "Install error" which reads, "File data
corrupt: probably due to a bad data transmission or bad disk
access." A copy is saved into the WINDOWS directory as INETD.EXE
and an entry is entered into the WIN.INI file to run INETD.EXE at
startup. KERN32.EXE (a backdoor Trojan), and HKSDLL.DLL (a valid
keylogger DLL) are written to the WINDOWS SYSTEM directory, and a
registry entry is created to load the Trojan upon system startup.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\kernel32=kern32.exe
Once running, the Trojan attempts to mail the
victim's IP Address to the author. Once this information is obtained,
the author can connect to the infected system via the Internet and steal
personal information such as usernames, and passwords. In addition, the
Trojan also contains a keylogger program which is capable of capturing
other vital information such as credit card and bank account numbers and
passwords.
These viruses send themselves out to others. The one who sent it
to you is not aware it is happening, and of course, did not do it
intentionally. Just be a good neighbor, protect yourself, and FYI
them how to do the same.
If you have been infected please
follow the link below for help.

Prevention methods:
1. Corporate email filtering systems should block all email that have
attachments with the extensions .scr and .pif.
2. Users should not open any emails with an attachment that matches the
names listed above. Any email that has such an attachment should be
deleted.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
Still trying to get the rooms of this house put together since
moving over three months ago, but I spent this afternoon setting up my
porcelain Christmas Scene with the angels, nativity, carolers, bakers,
various mosaic pieces, and candles on top of my entertainment center. I
thought I would share it with you here.
