From the Message Board:
It started with Sophie:
Introduction- guests and myself
I gave out $5 for each of the following:
*attending
*having a purse
*bringing a guest
*1st time PL Show
*All of "My" Hostesses
*Having a Visa -MC-Disc with them.
As I did my demo... Tealights, votives, ball candles
and all associated products. I stopped the demo and started asking
questions, (to make sure they were paying attention)
$5 to anyone that can tell me how long a tealight
burns
$5 to the person that knows how long I have been a PL Consultant
$5....do you trim the wicks on votives and tealights
$5....what kind of tealights do you burn in tealight houses
Etc....every question I asked was covered in my demo from the
Introduction up to ball candles.... I ask about 5 questions.
I resume the demonstration covering dinner tapers,
pillars, jars....again, after I finished with the all the associated
products I ask questions:
$5 for telling me what the lady's name was that first made the 6"
taper.... (Mabel Baker)
$5 to describe hugging
$5 to anyone that owns a 3-wick
$5 to anyone that owns the Grape Leaf Seville
Stuff like that....I ask usually 5 questions again.
I continue my demo with my hostess program and
sponsoring program and the benefits of both. Then the money goes up to
$10..
$10....what is the hostess credit % if no one books a show (15%)
$10...what is it if someone books (25%)
$10...how much in sales to earn a 1/2 price item
$10...etc...
$20 ...The guests ask ME questions about
consulting...$20 bucks for each question asked.
At the end of the demo...I tell everyone to count up
the Auction Bucks and be ready to start bidding...I had about 6
items....2 tapers tied together, 2 votives, 3 votives, 1 pc from Fruit
Splash, 1 of the wee threes, and a chocolate bar. I started out the
bidding usually at $50...and the guests bid on the items they wanted,
going back & forth....The more they answered during the demo, the
more auction bucks they received (obviously they paid attention)!
Here's one variation from Janis
Turk:
I also attended another home party and saw it. She
also included envelopes with money in it. She got her bookings from the
envelopes. I know H & G did the auction after everyone that wanted
to book booked and gave everyone 500 for doing so. She had 12 envelopes
and she gave the options of playing and passing twice. There were 12
colorful envelopes: 6 book a show, keep the money, free shipping,
box of tealight etc. If they played she double the money in the envelope
for the auction.
Another variation from Renee, UL:
I've been doing auctions at my shows for quite awhile
and they ARE really fun! I add a trump card to it though - if during the
bidding you scream the magic words, "I'LL HAVE A PARTY!!", and
book and date a party that night, you automatically win the prize
you're bidding for AND you get to keep your money to bid on other items.
Joyce suggests, "Just remember girls, (and I
say this at my parties!) it's PLAY MONEY!!! Don't be stingy with it and
the guests will think you are a HERO!!! I give out auction money for everything!!!"
And, one last word on the matter from "Candle
Man":
My wife has been using this for 6 months and her
business is booming. She gets an average of 3 bookings per show, she has
sponsored 12 new consultants this year, and won the trip to Cancun. She
starts her demo as usual and then stops and asks the guests questions,
then continues on and then stops again. The point is to get the guests
listening to what you are saying about the opportunity and the hostess
program. and it's working.
She usually auctions off 3 small items. First,
a basket containing a votive, votive cup, scrungee, bath soap, and a
candy bar. I think consultants call it a "Pamper Me Basket."
Second, a set of 2 votives. Last, a firecracker (made up of 1 red,
1 blue, and 1 vanilla tealight wrapped in plastic). She only allows
guest to win one item. She also jokes that they aren't allowed to count
each other's money or combine money or that disqualifies them. Last, she
has them each take an envelope, if they open the envelope she doubles
their money. The envelopes contain things like : no shipping, free
tealights, or book a show.
Administrator note: Do not give away a
LOT! If you give away too much, the guests will have no reason to
spend their money! Small gifts of a couple wrapped votives or
tealights, a chocolate bar, 2 tied tapers, free shipping, etc. will be
enough!
You can obtain play money from Wal Mart in the
stationary section, an educational supply store in the math section, Jenny
B, Express Yourself,
or print out your
own candle money here!
